AMSTERDAM — Renowned contemporary artist Alicia Framis challenges our shifting relationship with progress, technology, and space exploration in her compelling multimedia project, "Where Did the Future Go?"
Filmed in desolate, lunar-like landscapes, the short film and performance piece documents Framis’s experiences while training as an astronaut for the MOONMARS SPACE PROGRAM, in Utah, organized by the European Space Agency . For weeks, Framis underwent rigorous testing and adhered to strict extraterrestrial protocols alongside a team of international scientists to investigate a singular question: What happened to the hopeful, grand visions of the future we once imagined?
Shot exclusively during the transitional hours of dawn and dusk, the film captures a stark, poetic journey of a lone figure navigating a barren world. It serves as both a visual diary of her intensive preparation and a critical commentary on the commodification and abandonment of mid-20th-century utopian ideals.
During her time in the program, Framis field-tested futuristic consumer prototypes from her MoonLife Concept Store—an initiative exploring the aesthetic and practical realities of human life on the moon. By embedding art directly into official space program training, "Where Did the Future Go?" bridges the gap between cold technological advancement and the deeply human need for emotional, structural, and artistic expression in unknown territories.
